Welcoming Coach Robert Ferguson: A Story of Resilience and Leadership at Houston Wolves S.C.

Updated: 4 days ago

At Houston Wolves S.C., we believe soccer is more than just a game—it’s a community, a space for growth, and a place where passion and perseverance intersect. We are thrilled to welcome Coach Robert Ferguson to our coaching staff. His journey embodies the values we hold dear: grit, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the sport he loves.

The Early Days: A Lifelong Passion for Soccer

Coach Robert’s love affair with soccer began when he was just four years old. What started as a childhood pastime quickly became a way of life, fueling a passion that would take him around the world.

As a young adult, Robert joined the U.S. Air Force. While serving his country, he continued pursuing his love for soccer. Stationed in Germany, Robert played for SV Speicher, a team in Germany’s prestigious Bundesliga. Balancing his military duties with his commitment to the game, Robert thrived as an offensive midfielder and striker, leading his team from the front and creating opportunities on the field.

A Life-Altering Moment

In 2009, during a training mission at North Fort Hood, Robert’s life took an unexpected turn. A devastating injury led to the loss of his right leg. For many, this would have meant the end of their soccer dreams, but not for Robert.

Rather than allowing this setback to define him, Robert channeled his love for soccer into finding new strength and purpose. In 2016, he discovered the U.S. National Amputee Soccer Team, an organization dedicated to showcasing the talents of athletes who have overcome physical challenges. Robert transitioned into a defensive back, which allowed him to continue competing at a high level.

Robert proudly represented the United States in two Amputee Soccer World Cups, competing internationally and inspiring others with his skill and determination. Most recently, he played in the Amputee Soccer World Cup in Turkey, where his leadership helped the U.S. team stand tall among the world’s best.

A Visionary for Adaptive Soccer

Beyond his personal achievements, Robert is a visionary leader in the world of adaptive soccer. His desire to create opportunities for others led him to found the Lone Star Adaptive Soccer Association, an organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities experience the joy of soccer. Under his leadership, Lone Star Adaptive Soccer has become a beacon of hope and opportunity for athletes who may not have had the chance to play the game otherwise.

One of Robert’s proudest achievements is that half of the U.S. National Amputee Soccer Team that competed in the recent World Cup in Turkey came from his Lone Star program. This reflects not only his dedication to the game but also the vibrant community he’s built around it. Through Lone Star, Robert has shown countless athletes that with determination and passion, anything is possible.

His impact doesn’t stop there. Robert also serves on the board of the U.S. Amputee Football Federation, working to bring amputee soccer to universities nationwide. His vision is clear: to create more opportunities for athletes with disabilities and ensure that soccer remains an inclusive space for all who wish to play.
